Earthquake - Japan 2011

Japan Earthquake - 2011

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude-9 earthquake shook northeastern Japan, unleashing a savage tsunami.

The effects of the great earthquake were felt around the world, from Norway's fjords to Antarctica's ice sheet. Tsunami debris continues to wash up on North American beaches two years later.

Task 1: Download this map of Japan...

Use an atlas or map of Japan to mark on the location of Tokyo, Sendai and Fukishima Nuclear Power Station.

Label the main islands and the EPICENTRE of the earthquake.

In a factbox write down... the time of the earthquake / how far from the shore it was / depth of the earthquake focus / the magnitude of the earthquake.

Hundreds of aftershocks have continued to shake Japan, days after the massive magnitude 9 earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami on Friday, 11 March.
The two images below show the damage that was done by the earthquake and the Tsunami that followed. Use the slider to see the 'before' and 'after' image.

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on Sunday, 26 December 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake was caused when the Indian Plate was subducted by the Burma Plate and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing over 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (100 ft) high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.
