Disparity in Brazil

Brazil...core & peripheryThe idea of core and periphery is very simple. All it states is that some areas develop faster because of human and physical advantages and turn into the core and other areas that lack human and physical advantages become the less important periphery. Core areas are likely to experience greater growth, investment and net migration gain, while the peripheries may well be exploited and suffer from lack of investment. The map on the left shows the regional HDI figures for Brazil's states.

From the two maps above it is evident that every region of Brazil has significantly increased its Human Development Index in the span of two decades, with no federative unit under low human development by 2010. South, Southeast and Central-West are the most advanced regions, while the North and Northeast still present medium human development.
Task 1...On your blank map of Brazil, shade in the core area and the periphery area as indicted by the HDI map of Brazil.
Task 2: Read the essay on the right, it discusses the different reasons for why disparity exists within Brazil. Your textbook pages 96/97 also gives reasons for the regional contrasts.
Annotate your blank map with the key factors that cause disparity. Classify the different factors by shading them different colours. |
